Fri, Mar 30th, 8-10pm, Gypsy Dance – The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra - “We Make Really Party” EP release

"The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra play gypsy rock, folk funk music and create a "Wall of Sound" that would make Phil Spector proud. The song, "XO Tango," with an incredible violin solo, brought the house down."
- Michael Sangiacomo, The Cleveland Plain Dealer

The Tequila Mockingbird Orchestra are a collection of musicians, linked by common sonic journeys and familial ties It doesn’t matter much how they got here, but rather that they are traveling with each other. Now they are here in the room with you, the way music in the folk tradition always is, to bring people together; to share real flesh, blood and feeling.

WE MAKE REALLY PARTY is a 5 song EP that returns to the old world sounds the band became known for in its early years.  With both original and reimagined roots and folk songs in English, Spanish and Italian WE MAKE REALLY PARTY captures the band playing live off the floor in a three day session after their 2016 summer tour.  It is a record that is refined in both playing and production while honouring the band's past musically.

TMO have spent years weaving their stories with guitars and violins, with accordions and bass, with melodies and music makers gleaned from their wanderings. Here are the troubadours to remind you that this music (no matter what kind of device it ends up on) could not exist without warm bodies in search of harmony.   Bop till you drop !

Fri, Apr 6th, 8-10pm, Bluegrass Concert – Clover Point Drifters

A 3-show tour of Vancouver Island, with shows at Port Alberni, Cortes Island and Sayward. Three shows is not exactly an ambitious tour, but having been playing together for over 18 years, the boys are focused on quality rather than quantity.  Small venues are where their single-microphone show is best delivered, up close with fans that appreciate the fineries of the acoustic bluegrass musical form.

Mike Kraft (banjo, harmony  vocals) is one of Canada's  finest banjo players.  He shares with us his humour and stock picks.

Larry Stevens (resophonic guitar, lead vocals) has a gift for singing the country song, good times and bad, love and loss, the past and even further past.  George Robinson (bass, lead vocals) has the longest pedigree in the band, having played bluegrass bass since 1977.  Dan Parker (mandolin, lead vocals) he also builds guitars. Dan’s spirited and inventive solos complement the plodding efficacy of the old farts.  Alan Law (guitar, lead & harmony vocals) In a band of baritones, he enjoys the role of tenor singer, and he loves singing harmony more than almost anything you can imagine.

Sun, Apr 8th, 7-9pm, Concert – Dennis Ellsworth – Music PEI Awards Winner – singer songwriter

In 2017, Dennis Ellsworth needed to make a new album. And it was an emergency.

So, who better to call for assistance than Joel Plaskett, who assumed production duties and enlisted his friends, Charles Austin and Dave Marsh (longtime drummer in Plaskett’s backing band the Emergency), to participate. The result is Ellsworth’s fifth solo LP, Things Change, a brilliant convergence of his irresistible power pop songwriting chops with Plaskett and co.’s trademark vintage guitar-driven sound.

In the past, Prince Edward Island native Ellsworth has never hesitated to seek out the right people for specific projects. It’s led him to build an impressive body of work in conjunction with producer David Barbe (Drive-By Truckers, Sugar), along with CanRock heroes such as Josh Finlayson (Skydiggers, Gord Downie), Hugh Christopher Brown, and Tim Bovaconti (Ron Sexsmith). However, teaming up Plaskett at Joel’s New Scotland Yard studio in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia became a totally immersive experience for Ellsworth that opened up many new creative possibilities.

After two decades of making music in various incarnations, Ellsworth chalks up what he’s accomplished on Things Change in large part to simply being older and wiser. “For years I wrote dark, smooth, romantic alt-country-ish type songs,” he says. “I don’t know how I ever got there but I stuck with it for a while. I love those records, but I knew it was time I switched things up just to keep myself interested.”

Things indeed change, most often when we least expect them to. But sometimes when we know change is necessary, it can force us to finally go places we’ve long put off. Dennis Ellsworth has reached a place he’s always meant to be with Things Change, and thankfully he’s welcomed the rest of us to join him there.

Thu, Apr 19th, 7-9pm, Rock the Landing – Amateur Musicians Perform Pop & Rock – Featuring: Lauren Mann

••••• Lauren Mann “Honest & affectionate, with a little bit of whimsy,” is the sentiment behind songstress Lauren Mann’s latest album Dearestly. The songs are a poignant narrative of dark and light set against the backdrop of different landscapes, and chronicle years of touring and personal joys and struggles. Musically, the album travels from moments of sparse simplicity to bombastic choruses, anchored by Lauren’s vocal prowess and beautiful melodies.  The folk-pop singer songwriter from Calgary who recently put down roots in British Columbia’s Southern Gulf Islands, began her career in 2011 with the release of self-produced album Stories From Home, followed by the 2012 release Over Land and Sea, produced by Aaron Marsh and called “a sonic tapestry saturated by sunlight,” by Exclaim Magazine. Lauren’s songwriting captured the attention of listeners and critics alike and her single I Lost Myself reached #2 in the CBC Top 20.  In 2014, Lauren and her band were the winners of the CBC Searchlight contest, rising to the top of over 4500 bands across Canada and named Canada’s best new emerging artist.   Following the success of Over Land and Sea, Lauren surprised her fans with the release of her next full length album Dearestly in 2016, “an album in which each and every song stands as strong on its own as it does within a collective” (Fortitude Magazine). Dearestly was produced by Josh Rob Gwilliam and Howard Redekopp and recorded at OCL Studios in Calgary and establishes Lauren as an adept songwriter and performer.  Admission by donation in lieu of hall rental.   FMI please contact host Jeff Hallworth 250-723-4829 [email protected]

Fri, Apr 20th, 8-10pm, Concert – Gatekeeper – 80s Metal Tribute + Originals – Album Release Tour

The style of music is 80's heavy metal, similar to Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Van Halen

Originally formed in 2009 as a solo project by guitarist Geoff Blackwell,  GATEKEEPER  has assembled an impressive array of EPs and splits, including an appearance on Metal Blade’s “Metal Massacre XIV” where they contributed the song “Bell Of Tarantia”.
Recorded over the span of six months at Harbourside Studios in Vancouver, Canada,  East Of Sun  was produced by Mike Rogerson, whose previous credits include ANNIHILATOR, AGGRESSION, 88 MILE TRIP and LOVERBOY.

The “East Of Sun” title is a shortened version of a book of Scandinavian folk tales that parallels the content on the record where each song stands on its own. The album’s cover art was created by Duncan Storr, who has previously worked with SKYCLAD, RAGE and Cruz Del Sur’s own DARK FOREST.  East Of Sun  boasts a mixture of older, unreleased material written by Blackwell which are complemented by live staples that have recently been updated. In the words of Blackwell, “East of Sun is pure heavy metal with a sword and sorcery flourish. We wear our influences on our sleeves, but we don't want to be a pale imitation of them. We try to capture the spirit of what we love without copying anyone’s' notes. This album has our fastest song and it's got our biggest, most epic slow-burner and many songs in between. It has melodic electric guitar playing coupled with fierce riffs, thunderous rhythms, mystical acoustic passages and, of course, a unique and varied performance from our singer, Jean-Pierre Abbaud (SPELL, BORROWED TIME)”.  Recommended for fans of OMEN, early MANOWAR, MANILLA ROAD, ATLANTEAN KODEX!  East of Sun  will be released on  April 27  and will be available on compact disc including 2 bonus tracks (OMEN’s “Death Rider” and SAVATAGE’s “Hall Of The Mountain King”), on gatefold vinyl including A2 poster and digital.  www.cruzdelsurmusic.com

Sat, Apr 21st, 8-10pm, Concert – Jeffery Straker Singer-Songwriter-Pianist– Folk-Roots-Pop

Honest story songs combined with striking piano/vocal abilities.  Echoes of Kris Kristofferson/Billy Joel/Harry Chapin.

Top 10 on iTunes Canada singer-songwriter chart.

Originally from small town Saskatchewan, the classically trained pianist was raised by a church organist mother and auctioneer father. He swears he was born under the piano on the family farm. All this might explain his incredible ability to share songs with audiences.  Jeffery is a musical descendant of Beethoven through teacher-student lineage (see his website for the full story). He was a student of the Royal Conservatory of Music and received his licentiate diploma in piano performance from Trinity College, London when he was just 19.  Jeffery has showcased at major events including Canadian Music Week, NXNE, the Western Canadian Music Awards, & JunoFest as well as countless festivals.  He’s licensed songs for TV, film and theatrical use and has appeared on television several times.

“Straker’s CD has traces of some of the best piano-based singer-songwriters of the past 40 years, couched in his inimitable and effervescent style of folk-alt/pop influences”  - Calgary Herald

“This great work belongs on the shelf beside the finer recordings of Jackson Browne, Warren Zevon, & Elton John”

Mark Rheaume - CBC Radio
