Sat, Nov 12th, 8-10pm, Concert – Andrea SUPERstein Trio – The Island Adventure Tour – Indie Jazz
Quirky. Indie. Jazzy. Not your average jazz music and Andrea Superstein is not your average jazz singer. Penned as "redefining jazz" by esteemed critic Tom Harrison of the Vancouver Province, Superstein uses the traditional jazz format to breathe new life into old songs and nostalgia into the new. She knows where she comes from and is blazing a trail forward. The foundational underpinnings classic jazz are all there: swing, blues, Latin and ballad exist in a subtle way, infused with pop, indie rock and other unexpected elements. Standards like I Love Paris are given a trip-hop facelift while the pop anthem Venus resembles something out of film noir. Superstein also displays her skill as a songwriter with original compositions, taking us as far back as Tin Pan Alley and as fresh as neo-soul. She is a complex yet inclusive performer with some serious vocal chops who invites us to question why music has boundaries at all. A true artist.
Her latest record, What Goes On debuted at #4 on the Canadian charts where it remained for over 2 months. It debuted at #1 on CKUA's top 30 and remained there for over 2 months as well. The record debuted in the US at #16 on CMJ and was officially chartbound for Jazzweek as of Jan. 16th, 2016. What Goes On was listed as one of the top 5 vocal jazz records of 2015 on earshot, and was featured in BC Musician Magazine.
The record received FACTOR funding and was produced by Juno winner, Les Cooper (Jill Barber. The Good Lovelies).
Superstein received a Galaxie Rising Star nomination for her debut at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival in 2010 and has since performed at venues and festivals across the country. Her most recent tour saw her as a featured performer at the Calgary all-Canadian jazz festival and the Yardbird Festival in Edmonton. She also shared a triple bill with Canadian female heavyweights Laila Biali and Brandi Disterheft at the 2014 Vancouver International Jazz Festival.
Super’s new album is currently in development.
