Marisha Devoin has been performing with Andrea for the last 10 years! (Can you believe it?!) Since graduating from Vancouver Island University's Ba. Music program Marisha has performed in pit bands for musical productions with Chemainus Theatre, Arts Club Theatre & Patrick Street Productions (Vancouver), as well as cruise ship orchestras and cabaret bands. She works as a session musician, and educator in her burgeoning Nanaimo studio, and can be heard playing jazz, R&B, bluegrass (Hub City Ramblers), and prog rock (Eleanore) around the west coast.  Check out her boring and rarely updated website www.marisha.ca  (note sarcasm)

ANDREA SMITH BIO
“Smith has a fine expressive voice, can write solid, accessible material and has surrounded herself with great players from Miles Black and Phil Dwyer to producer/guitarist Pat Coleman. Radio will go nuts trying to categorize her but this is good stuff.”

Her rock, blues and country roots have a strong presence in her songwriting and choice of cover songs.

Andrea’s music crosses many genres. Here’s a guide to navigate through the back roads and highways of “Sweet Embrace”:

The title track Sweet Embrace and Monashee Breeze are upbeat country roots rock, Coolest Guy is a softer sweeter version of the same. This Time, Weary and Breathing are strongly rooted in the blues. Thrift Store Coat and Earl, while both jazz, one is of longing and the other a declaration of love. Closest Thing to Maybe is a breezy summery Latin jazz based dancing in your car seat kinda piece. Tracks of Life is a rock influenced soft pop piece, I Don’t Wanna Wait is soft pop with soul/blues and God Said is a beautifully composed and vocally orchestrated song of hope. White Machine changes gears again and brings us back to earth with an urban roots rock groove. Sweet Embrace, originally released in 2006 was nominated for five VIMA’s and took home Songwriter Of The Year and Producer/Engineer of the year. It was re-mastered and re-released in August 2014 with a bonus track.

Andrea’s third and latest album “Transition” also stirs up the genre pool. It was released in 2013 and nominated for three VIMAs:

Black Moods is country with a zydeco feel, Been Too Long is a catchy guitar riff roots piece. Insomniac Baby is a driving blues song and Wrong is blues with a twist. Tell Me Why is a grooving R&B pop tune. What You’re Not,  featuring a funkified guitar solo, is grooving rock pop, as is Loosely which tells the story of characters met while working at a liquor store. It features bari sax and is reminiscent of Rikki Lee Jones-style writing. Busy Being in Love is an R&B jazz earworm. Sunny Girl is jazz featuring a trance-like bass line. Meant For Me sounds like a standard jazz piece. Moonlight Shine is a lovely R&B soft pop song and Love Survive questions long distance love in the AC soft pop style.
