April 24th
The Graham Villette Trio

This trio has played together in a variety of different formations but is happy to bring you the trio format this evening. With spontaneous arrangements and exciting improvisation the Graham Villette Trio plays the music of the jazz greats drawing from the standard jazz repertoire.

Featuring:
Nick Peck on piano
Kosma Busheikin on upright bass
Graham Villette on drum

Nick Peck:
Nick Peck is a Canadian multi-instrumentalist and composer, primarily known as a jazz pianist and organist who has performed across Canada and Europe. Nick's background in the music was initially, self-taught, playing on the local Jazz circuit around his native Kent (UK). Pursing formal studies in music he was introduced to a wide range of classical, contemporary and world music that would broaden his outlook. However, it was in Jazz improvisation that he found his preferred outlet. Moving to London, he studied piano and composition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. During this time, he received tuition from Simon Purcell, Scott Stroman and John Talyor, all of whom implied ways in which a diverse range of ideas and colours could be brought together with respect to the Jazz tradition.

Kosma Busheikin:
Born in the Czech Republic, Kosma moved with his parents to the small island of Denman when he was two years old. When he was 16 he decided to take guitar lessons with local singer-songwriter Kevin Mitchell. This marked the beginning of his passion for playing and teaching music. After a couple years of lessons, Kosma began performing at small events around town and began to consider a career in music. After taking some lessons with VIU alumni Marc Atkinson (Juno nominated, multi-instrumentalist, gypsy jazz guitar) he felt encouraged to enroll in VIU's jazz program. In what felt like no time, Kosma had completed the 4 year program and began working to establish himself in the Nanaimo music community. At VIU he added the upright bass to his arsenal and feels at home performing with both guitar and bass. Some notable venues that Kosma has played at are Hermanns jazz club, Frankies jazz club, the Port theater, Tofino Jazz festival, Hornby Island music festival. Some notable people he has studied with include Ken Lister, Lee Ellefson, Pat Coleman, John Lee, Hans Verhoeven, and Ben Henriques. Kosma currently plays in the John Lee trio, Graham Villette's "Organized Crime", Tasha Adam's quartet and the NMA big band and he always brings his love of blues and swing to the bandstand.

Graham Villette:
Graham Villette is Nanaimo jazz musician and has been playing music professionally for over a decade. Villette attended Vancouver Island University and completed the Bachelors Degree In Jazz Studies program there in 2019. In the spring of 2021, he finished a Masters Degree In Jazz Performance at the University of Toronto. For the last 8 years Villette has had the pleasure of working with many prominent jazz musicians including Cory Weeds, Joe Magnarelli, Ben Henriques, John Lee, Attila Fias, Andrew Homzy, Greg Bush, Ryan Oliver, Bryan Stovell, Kinga Hemming and Tony Genge. Villette has also lead many of his own projects including, “Organized Crime” a quartet that focuses on Hammond B3 Organ repertoire from the 1960’s as well as Villette’s own original compositions, the “Graham Villette Standards Trio” featuring the music of saxophone legends such as Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, and a tribute band that pays homage to saxophone great Hank Mobley.
