Emergency Support Services (ESS) are a very important part of the Alberni Valley's emergency plan. This group, made up entirely of volunteers, is one that most people don't realize exists. They provide short term relief after a family has had to leave their home quickly and unexpectedly. This can happen in several emergency circumstances but in Port Alberni is most often the result of a house fire. Imagine being on the sidewalk with your family, maybe in the middle of a rainy night, unable to go back into your home. ESS will provide a place to stay, access to food and basic necessities and emotional suupport for the first 72 hours after a disaster. This gives evacuees time to get their bearings, contact their insurance company and make alternate living arrangements.
ESS is activated by the Port Alberni Fire Department when a need for their services is identified. Volunteers respond to the scene and are put in touch with the victims of the event. They ensure each family has transportation to a place to stay for the first 72 hours, access to food an clothing, and a list of additional resources that may be able to provide further assistance after the ESS role is over.
More volunteers are always needed and welcomed. Disaster work on any level offers a unique opportunity to help others when help is needed most. Working in this field challenges volunteers to stretch their own limits and potential.
The Alberni Valley Emergency Plan needs volunteers who have a concern for people affected by disaster and want to help, have good communication skills, are able to respond on short notice, are in good health and have a sense of adventure. No specific skills are required to be an ESS volunteer. Training is provided close to home and free of charge. The local ESS team meets on a monthly basis.
