At once ancient sounding yet thoroughly modern, Pennybrook specializes in original instrumentals and old-fashioned songs. Their music is atmospheric, rich and complex, grounded in and inspired by their love for Celtic music. Their original compositions draw on both traditional and contemporary influences, their unique sound ranges from quietly contemplative to fiery foot-stomping celebration. Jude and Charlie have been playing together for five years; in 2011 they released The Edge of Waiting, their first, full-length CD of original instrumental music, and have played concerts in every province and in the Yukon Territory. Following a successful crowdfunding campaign, they are now delighted to be working on their second album.
Charlie Wilson: left her home in the Northwest of England in 2000, to work with Aboriginal youth in the Western Arctic. The following year she moved to Whitehorse,Yukon, and became an active player in the vibrant arts scene there. After seven years she left by sailboat and headed down the Inside Passage to Vancouver. In the Fall of 2010, Charlie travelled to Nova Scotia to record a CD of original compositions for flute with her friend Jude Pelley. She stayed, fell in love and is now happy to call Nova Scotia's South Shore her home. Along with enjoying a rich musical life, Charlie has worked as a theatre artist and aerial dancer in Whitehorse and Vancouver; she has earned a black belt in aikido and teaches aikido to children; she has made a living as a carpenter; she recently became a sailing instructor with the wonderful Nova Scotia Sea School.
Jude Pelley: was born in Newfoundland and raised on Nova Scotia's South Shore. Inspired by his father, who played with seminal Canadian folk-rock group, Figgy Duff, Jude spent his formative years playing with Bridgewater's award-winning bluegrass band, Exit 13. Since then his musical adventures have included touring Nova Scotia by bicycle; being a mainstay in Victoria's vibrant professional music scene for 5 years; criss-crossing the country, usually in vehicles which run on waste vegetable oil, or by train; hosting the Pennybrook Festival on his property in West Dublin; running a small-scale acoustic music recording and production studio, Alone Stone Productions (he produced Juno winner Amelia Curran's first two solo albums). This past Summer he was thrilled to be involved in a recording project of his own Chamber music compositions, collaborating with some of the finest musicians in Nova Scotia: his old friend John Scott, Chris Norman, David Greenberg, and the Blue Engine String Quartet. But mostly, when the weather is good, you will find Jude up a ladder with a hammer in his hands, or in the blackcurrant patch.
