Harold: “StreetCorner Serenade” is the first independent release by Harold Anderson.  It is the result of the community of Duncan, BC, pulling together to give an opportunity for those who played music on the city streets to move ahead by sponsoring the First Ever Busker’s Burn-Off; a musical performance competition with a first prize of 8 hours of recording time at Woodshop Studios in the Cowichan Valley.  Spearheaded by Eugene Smith of Ronnie Hawkins fame, the “Burn-Off”  was held at the Duncan Showroom in February of 2015.  Harold was the eventual winner of the event, and has now put together a small collection of his original songs showcasing several of his earlier songwriting efforts, combined with three of his later labors of love, each written at Warmland House during his time there.
Eugene: His prodigious vocal talents are supported by solid rhythms from his unusual 4 string tenor guitar, and he holds as well in his bag of tricks a variety of musical instruments including the harmonica, kalimba, jaw harp and djembe.  Each show is delivered in his own unique, humorous and entertaining style, bringing to each performance a sense of harmony and the magical power of music! http://www.eugenesmith.ca/    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aIOR54iQyK8

Eugene Smith Bio
Eugene Smith is a venerable icon of the Canadian music industry. With over 50 years in the business and over 200 original tunes to his credit, Eugene brings a warmth and generosity to his performances that entertains and captivates audiences wherever he goes. His prodigious vocal talents are supported by solid rhythms from his unusual 4 string tenor guitar, and he holds as well in his bag of tricks a variety of musical instruments including the harmonica, kalimba, jaw harp and djembe. Each show is delivered in his own unique, humorous and entertaining style, bringing to each performance a sense of harmony and the magical power of music!
Eugene comes by his many musical talents honestly. His father was the amazing Al Lucas, who played stand up bass for such greats as Duke Ellington and James Brown. His mother, Valeire Abbot, was a well-known Toronto jazz pianist and vocalist who was invited by Louis Armstrong to tour as a jazz singer with his orchestra. Over the past 4 decades Eugene has shared the stage with such great artists of the music world as Gordon Lightfoot, k.d. Lang, David Clayton Thomas, King Curtis, Willie Dixon, Lenny Breau, Peter Tosh, Bo Diddley, John Lee Hooker, The Beach Boys and The Dave Clark Five. In the wild and wonderful 60’s he played Toronto and toured the United States as a singer with Ronnie Hawkins and the infamous Hawks.
Eugen’s latest CD, “Now and Forever”, features many of his most loved classic tunes, as well as his new single, “Thank You Mother”. Eugene lives on Vancouver Island, where he has a large following, and tours Ontario in the summer months, sharing his love and passion for music wherever he goes!
“Sometimes just the feel of a song says a lot about where it’s coming from and the Spirit in which it was written… There’s a real delightful feel about ‘Eugene’s music’ that only the performance carries.” Murray McLaughlin

Harold Anderson Music:

Much more than just a Musician that plays nice songs;

History:

Harold grew up in and amongst the Glam and Glob of the Entertainment World as the son of lifetime Entertainer, Murray Anderson.   A Winnipeg-born, 3rd Generation Entertainment Professional, Harold brings a Savory Flavor to most any event.

Referred to as ‘the Pearl’ by Longevity John Falkner in the 2015 “39 Days of July Festival” program, Harold has come a long way on the path of self-discovery since returning to his roots after winding up at the Warmland House Homeless Shelter in 2011.

“All that was left was the music,” Harold explains, “When all the untrue negative self images a person can carry around with them their whole life gets stripped away, they then have a Chance to find out who they really are.  I was an Entertainer first, and that’s what I’ve returned to, only now I bring a lifetime of experience, and the observations I’ve made over the many segments, careers and relationships that this life has afforded me.”

Throughout the 3 years Harold resided at Warmland, he maintained an exhaustive practice regimen to bring his musical skills and repertoire up to a standard by which he could earn his living doing what he loved; and it shows.  Harold’s renditions of many of what would now be called “Classics” by the current generation, captures the essence of the original recordings, taking the listener back to a time and place as only music can do.

A Business Administration graduate from Vancouver Community College, Harold has been involved in business, sales, and advertising since the early 1980’s, having held the positions of Marketing Coordinator for U.N.I.C.E.F., Circulation Supervisor for Southam Press, as well as Assistant Produce Manager positions at several major supermarkets.

A multi-instrumentalist, Harold is seen here with Cowichan Valley Recording Artist, “Sweet Potato” Brown at the Nanaimo Blues Societies’ weekly event at the Queen’s Hotel in Nanaimo, BC.

“I’ve learned that giving back is how to move forward,” he continues, “It took a whole community to help this one wayward son to find himself and his place in the grand scheme of things, a debt that I can never repay, except by the giving back of the gift that I have been given the opportunity to refine; the very songs I sing.  The only problem is that I don’t know them all, yet!”

“HomeLess Harold”

Ultimately, Harold’s goal is to perform in the school system in order to deliver a timely message; ‘You Have Options!’  “That’s it in a nutshell,” he explains, “Most young people have not been prepared for the realities of reality.  We have been fed from childhood the ‘Happily Ever After’ version of life that negates the fact that at some point in our lives, age not withstanding, things just don’t go as planned.  From family break-ups and relational disparities to accidental and illness-related losses, we all will face the harshness that life sometimes spews out in our direction, and with an ill-equipped model to draw strength from, many young people today are resorting to alcohol, drugs, sex, and suicide to cope with their pressures.  ‘HomeLess Harold’ draws from my own life experiences encompassing the vicissitudes of abundance and poverty to charge the delivery of the message so that it is sure to get in.  There are people, organizations, and institutions already in place to help those who’ve been kicked to the curb to get back up.  The main issue is ignorance.  If I can help just one young person to make an informed decision, then it will all have been worth it.
