Port Alberni’s Urbanstreet Choir will be rolling out the red carpet for their upcoming spring show.
“Broadway Lights and Hollywood Nights” takes place Saturday, May 2 at the Alberni Valley United Church. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. This year’s show will feature music that has been a part of musicals, movies and television over the years.
Fittingly, the choir will be rolling out a literal red carpet at the church entrance, so audiences can dress up, take a stroll and take some photos.
“I’m hoping people will come thinking they’re taking a stroll down the red carpet to Hollywood,” explained director Janet Schlackl. “It will be a fun event. We hope to be able to draw audiences into that fun.”
It’s also the biggest show the choir has ever performed, according to choir member Colleen Brooks. The choir grew “substantially” after the Christmas break, up to 42 members.
“It’s hard to say ‘no’ to people who want to sing,” said Brooks. One of these new members is Peter Kulich, who has previously sung in Urbanstreet’s a cappella choir and is also the sound technician for both groups. Kulich says it’s been an adjustment joining the “big” choir this year.
“It’s very collegial,” he explained. “There’s lots of banter.”
“And bad jokes,” Brooks added with a laugh.
