Presentation Details: Mr. Jeffrey Cook of the Huu-ay-aht First Nation, and Board of Director member of the Port Alberni Rotary Club will recount the story of the discovery and return of children’s artworks created at the Alberni Indian Residential School, to Survivors and their families. What began as a gift of a collection of children’s paintings to the University of Victoria blossomed into a 10-year long journey of reconciliation between Alberni IRS Survivors, their families, and faculty and students at the University of Victoria. This journey of reconciliation work is recorded in the Final Report of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the story of the return of the paintings is permanently on display in the Canada History Hall at the Canadian Museum of History. Jeff and Andrea will share moments of success during this project, and they will also speak to the challenges they faced and how a small group of people and their vision created a national impact through their collective efforts.
This presentation is accompanied by a slide show of images of the paintings and the people who have been part of this project. The presentation includes a short 7 minute video with audio.
