Dawn Miller was raised within the United Church of Canada where her father was a minister. Her grandfather, Moses, had been a Methodist circuit preacher on the prairies of Manitoba. Dawn and her family spent her early years in several towns on Vancouver Island and the Lower Fraser Valley. They lived in Port Alberni when she was age six to eight. he church and town of Port Alberni greatly shaped her earliest memories and emotions. The manse where they lived was right beside the church. She spent many happy hours finding herself things to do with people working in the church; janitors, children’s’ leaders and musicians. They all treated her so well. She also remembers store and restaurant owners who were so kind and fun. Dawn was excited several years ago when she found the church still existed but was purchased and used as a type of community center called “Char’s Landing.” She was so happy that Charlene had maintained much of the building in its original state. They have remained in touch since. Following high school Dawn took teacher training at UBC and taught a few years. She met and married a Saskatchewan farmer. They raised their somewhat unusual family in the Prairies. Dawn even attributes the composition of her family to events that happened in Port Alberni. Over the years, Dawn returned to the more evangelical faith of her Granddaddy, Moses and the family became part of and active in the Mennonite Brethren church. When Dawn and her husband retired they moved to a gated village in Surrey, B.C. where they led Bible Studies and were involved in care home ministries. In her book she seeks to call more people back to a life centered on the church. She found that within churches, children can develop faith but also be psychologically nurtured by the people within. Certainly our children today need that personal care and love which she received as a child. While participating in Electric Mermaid, she anticipates somehow thanking the wonderful people who were part of her past in Port Alberni. Many of those people are now gone, but relatives and friends may still be there. The town of Port Alberni has itself been shaped by some of those original people she remembers so fondly.
