A Tribute to Glenn Wong

On behalf of the Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce staff, directors and membership, I would like to express sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Glenn Wong. Glenn touched and worked for everything that is good in our community and probably represented his constituents better than most politicians. He served on our board of directors as a liaison for the Regional District of Alberni-Clayoquot. He didn’t say a lot during meetings, but when he did, people listened. He treated all with respect and as Patrick Deakin mentioned the other day, he consistently made those addressing the Regional Board feel welcome, respected and at ease. We will sadly miss his leadership and his friendship.
The BC Minister of Transportation, the Honourable Mary Polak, made an excellent presentation at our recent Networking Luncheon at the Best Western Barclay Hotel. She has been here before. Our last encounter was when she was representing the province as Sports Minister during the U-17 World Hockey Challenge. She referenced that visit commenting on the inclement weather and contrasted it to the summer-like weather she enjoyed here on this trip. She got out river fishing but described her success by likening our fish to the ICBC workers that day – on strike! Much like our last Networking Luncheon speaker, Stockwell Day, she commented on the great potential for Port Alberni, as long as we accept change and well thought out development. She mentioned that her meetings with the Port Authority and City Council were fruitful, bringing her up to speed on the transportation projects we are lobbying for. And, as for BC Ferries – a huge thorn in her side, the minister was advised to solve all the ferry problems, for once and for all, by building a bridge.
The Chamber’s Shop Alberni campaign continues with some 25 participating merchants offering special discounts to card-carrying shoppers. The cards are still available at the participating shops and both the shops and the specials are listed on our website, avcoc.com. The latest lucky Shop Alberni gift certificate winner is Callie McGarrigle. Callie receives a $25.00 gift certificate from Secluded Wellness.
