Positive Port Alberni

PaGo grannies report: We had a very successful “Funky Chair Sale” on Saturday and made $390.00. Thank you to all who created our great chairs, and those who helped with the sale. Many people were disappointed to find that we had sold our chairs so quickly, and have made orders for the next one!
And now to all you people of Port Alberni who purchased those chairs, accept personal thanks for all the members of our association. You have been so generous in your support for many of our projects. To members, please note that our 3rd annual tea will take place on Sunday, October 3rd from 2-4 p.m.
TERRY FOX. The Lions and many friends were out on Sunday to welcome the hundreds of participants to this annual celebration of Terry Fox. But Lion Monarch Robert Dalton reported that this was the worst attendance that we have had sine we have been running this project. This is not like Port Alberni. What were some of the reasons for this low turn out? I would like to hear from our citizens. This young man should be the patron saints to our youths. Here is a man who was so unselfish in his devotion to raise money to find a cure for cancer. Have we forgotten about Terry? Do let me hear from you!
CELEBRATE THE WORD AT ABBEYFIELD ON WEDNESDAY , September 29th.
We have a lot of poets and writers residing here. This is an evening spent with the residents at Abbeyfield. This week-end I was reading the first booklet put out by the Creative Writer’s group in 1975! I share with you a [poem by Maureen Brechin:
Reflection by Maureen.
I am like the leaves that begin to fall and change to shades of gold and brown.
They are sign autumn approaches.
I reach out to gather the harvest of the years,
Like the farmer who reaps what he has sown.
Yet there seems nothing left to gather but loneliness...
I am a page of time filed away to be read only on specific occasions.
My thoughts, my words, have no value;
They are nothing more than the mumblings of an old man.
The sand sifts through the hour glass, and there are only a few grains left.
Soon they shall slip away, and time will have passed,
The end will have come.
I shall be reading from this book on Wednesday 20th at 6 p.m at Abbeyfield. Come along and celebrate the word. Poetry, story, recitation, speech. We look forward to seeing you all..
FOOD AND FILOSOPHY..OCTOBER 4TH AT Dolce Vita. MUSIC IN OUR LIVES!!
My faithful brother-in-law is one of my faithful members on-line, and again he has shared the following response to our topic. His name is David Cuffy, a well-known journalist in Trinidad.
LET THE MUSIC PLAY..
Music is one of life’s blessings. It is God’s gift to mankind. It enriches life and is a way to understand our cultural heritage, as well as other past and present cultures. Are we fully aware that music is all around us? We do not need to be experienced musicians, regular concert goers, or amateur or professional performers to enjoy it. We just need to take time to listen.
Ever listen to the chirp of a bird in a tree, or the rustle of the wind-blown leaves? What about the crash of a waterfall, or the croak of a frog, or moo of a cow? Check out the sound of rain falling on your roof, or the swish of tires on a wet road. These are just some of he sounds of music that surrounds us, but to hear and enjoy them, we need to truly listen.
In today’s trouble-filled world, if we will but take time to listen, music can act as a stabilizer, a “balance wheel” against the tensions of everyday living. Through its influence our lives can be uplifted , sweetened, and refined. I have come to understand that music is not part of “arts and entertainment” as the newspaper section would have us believe. It is not a luxury, not something we fund from the remains of our budgets, not a plaything, an amusement, or a pastime, but a vital part of our existence.
If man is the best creation of God, then music is the best creation of man. Great music has stirred the whole world and touched millions of souls. It can break all divisions of race, religion and creed. What speeches and articles cannot do, the magic of music can do easily and naturally.
My country Trinidad and Tobago is a land of music of several genres: calypso, steelband, chutney, parang, gospel, raga, just to name a few, and our calypsonians, the poets that speak to us in song of life and living.
I now share with you an excerpt from the lyrics of a calypso titled “Music” composed and sung by The Mighty Sparrow (Winston Bailey) that is so simple, so direct, yet so effective in the glorification of the Creator and the power of music.
“Music sweet, music sweet.
The one who invented music has got to be terrific.
That will be the one who created the sun and the trees, rivers and seas.
Music fills the world with happiness, plenty sweetness and togetherness.
Music has no friends nor enemies
Everybody could digolay.(show off while dancing happily)
If your clothes tear up or your shoes burst up
You could still jump-up when music play.
Old lady, young baby, everybody could dingolay.”
I thank you very much David for taking the time to engage in our discussions in Food and Filosophy. I do hope that one day you could join us in our discussions.
