Positive Port Alberni

Folkfest Parade! This is your last day to take part in the parade. We thank Gillian Shearwater for all the time that she has put into getting this parade ready. It is a lot of work involved, and I know that as a community you will join with me in thanking Gillian for another well-run parade. It always amazes me to see what a few members of this society can produce. Come out and celebrate Our Community. As I see your generous response to our brothers and sisters involved in the fire of Down Town Manor, I feel very proud to belong to this community. Give me the community with a heart any day! We just did not come to look at the fire, but we were there for the people who lived in those apartments. That is what Folkfest is celebrating this year. Celebrating our Community. We thank you in advance for taking part in the Canada Day Celebration..
PROJECT PRIDE: The Lions club has had this project for a number of years now. We have been busy visiting our grade one students in all the schools in Port Alberni. We give each student a certificate, telling them of the pride felt in being a member of the Canadian Society. I am very close to this project, for it gives me the opportunity of visiting our young Canadians. I thank the School Board, and teachers of the grade one classes for giving us this opportunity of celebrating our Flag annually. Thanks also for all the Lions who take part in this project!
SONNETS! SONNETS! We meet for our last meeting of this session at Abbeyfield, Thanks to the residents who have been coming to these session on the last Wednesday of each month. Quite recently, we have challenged ourselves to study some plays of Shakespeare. Thus far, we studied Macbeth, Julius Caesar and The Merchant of Venice. We have decided to invite all citizens to come along on Wednesday 29th at 6 p.m. armed with a Shakespearean sonnet! I want to thank Gordon Scoffield for telling the stories of the plays, and Meg Scoffield suggested that we try the sonnets. I invited Sam McKimm, and he told me that he is preparing songs by Shakespeare! You have a treat, so whether you have your sonnet or not, you are sure to have an enjoyable Shakespearean evening!
FOOD AND FILOSOPHY: We had our last meeting on Monday before closing for the summer break. At our final meeting, we asked members to suggest topics for the coming year. Here are some suggestions: Canada Council, what is it all about?
How do you see the people of Port Alberni? Progressive? Thoughtful? Positive? Afraid of change? What do you think? Some of you have been working on Outlook 20/20. A member would like to share her view on the process thus far. The need for Meditation. This member would like us to give it a try, She gave us a workshop on Laughter Yoga, and now she runs a class at West Coast General Hospital. Food and Filosophy is more than talk! Action is also part of this group. President Kennedy said: Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country. Time for individual social responsibility. What are you giving to your community?
Thank you Port Alberni for another successful year.
