Positive Port Alberni

GET INVOLVED IN YOUR COMMUNITY… This is Volunteer’s month. We need each other to create this vital and giving society. We congratulate Pam Craig, who is the Citizen of the Year. The poet told us: Lives of great men/women. All remind us, we can make our lives sublime, and departing leave behind us, footprints on the sands of time. Let us hope that we all will follow Pam’s example in cultivating Social Responsibility. Involvement would be the watchword:
GET INVOLVED in the Folkfest Parade. The theme is Celebrating our Community. You and I know that there is lots to celebrate about Port Alberni. Deadline for completed entry forms is June 10th. GET INVOLVED in Celebrating the Word at Abbeyfield on Wednesday 27th at 6 p.m. We are continuing to have our brush with Shakespeare. Thus far, we have heard the stories of Macbeth and Julius Caesar. This coming Wednesday, you will hear the story of The Merchant of Venice. Again, I thank Gordon Scoffield on behalf of this community for sharing his talent as the story teller of these plays. There are so many lines of Shakespeare that we use in our language! I am sure you heard these lines: All that glitters is not gold, often have you heard this told.” Yes, this is Shakespeare. What about people demanding their “pound of flesh?” Again this is from The Merchant of Venice. Try this one: The quality of mercy is not strain’d. Again, we shall revisit this beautiful verse on Wednesday. Tell your friends about our program and come and spend an hour with the residents of Abbeyfield. Since Gordon would not be able to be with us in May, I am suggesting that we have famous biblical quotes! Finish this. The Lord is my shepherd…..If I speak with the tongues of angels….By the rivers of Babylon….Whatsoever things are true...Think on these things. If you have some that you have memorized, then that will be fine, but if your want to read your favourite verses, that will also be fine. We end in June with some sonnets from Shakespeare. I thank you all for daring to have your brush with the bard...which was not hard!!
GET INVOLVED in Food and Filosophy. Shane Ali wants to take on the world. We ask members of the group to present their own topic for discussion, and he told the group that he would talk on Civilization. I asked him to outline his talk. And this was his answer: What is Civilization? The Age of Planet Earth and the evaluation process of man leading to Civilization. Early man. Known Civilizations. Asia: Indus Valley, Daxi and Xia periods. Sumerian, Babylon, Mesopotamia etc. Africa: Ancient Egypt, Kingdom of Kush. Americas: Incas, Aztecs, Maya. Europe: Greece and Rome. Other. I am going to make sure that I am early at Dolce Vita on Monday, May 2nd. Food begins at 5:30 and the Filosophy follows.. Thanks, Professor Ali.
