One of the most effective ways for our City Council to successfully govern is by having good engagement with the public. How can you make your voice heard by Council? Here are a few methods, some more effective than others:
- Wait until you happen to run into a Councillor or the Mayor in your normal routines about town.....not very effective as it shows your level of motivation as being somewhat low.
- Send a letter via Canada Post or hand deliver it to City Hall, addressed to "Mayor and Council”. This is the tried and true method of having your correspondence included on the next Council meeting agenda.
- Email your message to your City Council, or address it to Council and email it to the City Clerk
- Call a member of your Council then follow up with an email or letter.
- Come to a public Council Meeting (schedule is posted in City Hall and on our website) to voice your opinion and/or ask questions.
- Attend our open engagement sessions of Coffee with the Mayor and Council (schedule at City Hall and on website)
- Phone, walk in, or email a request for an appointment with Councillors, the Mayor, or staff.
- Write a letter to the editor of one of our local newspapers. This helps raise a topic and stimulate conversation in the community but does not automatically get sent to the City for inclusion on Council’s agenda. If this is your intention please send it specifically to City Hall addressed to Mayor and Council.
- Run for City Council in the next municipal election and really get involved!
As far as timing goes, your correspondence needs to be received by the Wednesday prior to a Council meeting in order to be on that specific agenda. This is in accordance with the City’s procedures bylaw. Otherwise it will appear on the following meeting's agenda, which is generally two weeks later.
Remember, City Hall is YOUR place, this is YOUR City. Come on in and get involved!
