Food & Filosophy Begins Sept 8th

I hope that we are all rested, and ready to work on making Port Alberni the best place on earth. It was a very restful vacation for me, and I am looking forward to do all I can in my little way to do all I can for this community. Our first speaker will be Barb Stevenson. This lady has recently retired, and here she is plunged in the task of working for this wonderful place. Her Topic is "Port Alberni - Better at Home".
This community has supported Food and Filosophy over the past 12 years. We thank you very much. We are ready and willing to continue with this method of discussing a variety of topics for the good of this community.
Here is the information of the first meeting on September 8th at Dolce Vita at 5:30 p.m. Attending this gathering will be two representatives from the Port Alberni Better at Home Programme, Barb Stevenson (Program Coordinator) and Lynn Turner (Information and Referral Coordinator.
Better at home is a programme to help seniors continue to live independently in their own homes by providing access to simple non-medical support services coordinated and delivered locally using a mix of paid workers and volunteers. Services are offered as referrals or arranged directly through Better at Home. While some services may be offered for free, the majority of Better at Home services are provided on a fee-for-service basis based on the clients’ self declared household income and per a sliding scale.
Better at Home services do not duplicate any existing home care services provided by community health workers, such as personal hygiene assistance and help with meals, medical needs or physical mobility. The mix of Better at Home services offered in the community are based on the assets and unique needs of local seniors and may include: Friendly visiting by Volunteer, Transportation to appointments, light housekeeping, Minor home repairs, Grocery Shopping, Light yard work (or snow shovelling, One stop contact for information/referral to available services for seniors.
Better at Home was initiated in Port Alberni in January of this year by the Alberni Valley Assisted Living Society (Heritage Place) through a $30 million grant funded by the provincial government and managed through the United Way of the Lower Mainland (UWLM). Since being introduced in 2012, the Alberni Better at Home Program has been established in over 60 communities across British Columbia.
Better at Home is available to all seniors living in the Alberni Valley. Seniors are generally people aged 65 or older, however, our programme has not set a minimum age for older adults seeking the better at Home services.
We look forward to seeing you on Monday 8th September at Dolce Vita at 5:30 p.m.
