Emergency Kits for your Car

Highway 4 can be an adventure in driving at the best of times.  It's not unusual for our one road access to Port Alberni and the West Coast to be blocked due to snow, windstorms, or a tragic vehicle accident as we've seen recently.  For travellers it can mean an unplanned delay for many hours at a time.  At any time of year, drivers should be prepared to manage the unexpected when embarking on a road trip.
An emergency kit for your car does not have to take up a lot of room.  A small back pack stowed in your trunk will carry everything you will need to stay comfortable when you are unable to make it home as planned.  Bottled water and snacks such as dried fruit, granola bars, crackers, and other non perishable items will keep you from getting hungry and ensure your ability to stay alert.  If you travel with children, consider their needs.  It might mean some extra diapers and baby food for very young ones or books, toys or games for older kids.  A blanket will allow you to stay warm without continuously running the engine and using up fuel.  If anyone in your family requires regular medications, a little extra in the emergency kit will ease anxiety as you wait to get moving again.
Cell phone coverage over the Hump is improving all the time so make sure your battery is fully charged before you leave home.  A full gas tank is important so check your fuel before you leave town and again as you get ready to return to the Valley.  A good practice is to fill the tank when it reaches the half full mark so you are never caught short.  Your vehicle should be in good running condition with appropriate tires for the season.
Taking some time now to prepare an emergency kit for your car will prevent the unexpected from becoming a traumatic event for you and your family.  For more suggestions on what to keep in your car for emergencies, go to http://www.acrd.bc.ca/ or send me an email at [email protected] or laurie_l'[email protected]
