Beary Christmas!

As 2009 draws to a close your Alberni Valley Bear Smart Committee would like to offer a big bear hug of thanks and appreciation for all of the support we have received from the community.
Over the last year you may have spotted us during our door-to-door campaigns sporting the brand new brochure and logo; at the award winning information booth set up at the Salmon Fest Bullhead Derby, Forest Fest and the Fall Fair and waving with big bear grins in the Canada Day parade!
We were able to reach the public with valuable Bear Smart information and tips through the support of the Alberni Valley Times and our blog on Alberni.ca. The phone calls and feedback we received from these articles were truly encouraging and appreciated!
This year we spearheaded a major project in producing a 2010 Alberni Valley Bear Smart calendar featuring 12 winning photos from our photo contest held in the summer. With dedicated work from our volunteers, support from local businesses and individuals and fantastic production (and patience!) from the Graphics Factory the calendar has truly been a success! The calendars are available for sale for $15 at the Clock Tower Gallery, Rollin Arts Centre and through any local volunteer. The Alberni Valley Bear Smart Committee will use the proceeds from the calendar to continue “Bear Smart” educational efforts in the valley in 2010.
In the upcoming year, the committee will provide local schools with interactive presentations to educate children on bear safety, bear biology and how to prevent human-bear conflicts. The committee will also continue with regular “Bear Smart” newspaper articles, door-door campaigns and actively participate at community events.
From all of us here at the Alberni Valley Bear Smart Committee, we wish you a very “Beary Christmas” and all the best for 2010!
