Beards and Bonnets

The Alberni Valley Chamber of Commerce is staging a “Beards and Bonnets” contest during Port Alberni’s centennial homecoming event in early August. It’s taking place on stage at Bob Dailey Stadium. All contestants have to do is register under the Chamber of Commerce tent and then come up on stage when your category is being judged. The following are the categories: Men – best overall beard, best moustache, best freestyle facial hair and best fake beard. Women & Children – 6 yrs and under best bonnet, 12 yrs. and under best bonnet and over 12 yrs. open and best historic reproduction. There will be nice prizes for each category, so if you haven’t started growing or creating, times a wasting!
The chamber will also host the community homecoming reception at the Visitor Centre 4:30 – 7:30pm, Friday Aug.3rd. We will be greeting all our home comers, making sure they have all their travel, accommodation and “things to do” information. Refreshments will be served and Danny MacMillan will supply the tunes.
Check this past week’s newspapers for participating merchants in the ongoing Shop Alberni campaign. We still need more merchants to join in the promotion. Just call or stop by the chamber office and sign up. This campaign is designed to increase your traffic, keep retail dollars in town and provide shoppers with great bargains. There are close to a thousand shoppers registered so far. The more merchants that come on board the more successful the campaign will be. It carries on right up until Dec.31st.
It was very gratifying to see so many people out to our slide show of the cruising down the Danube last week. We had so many interested folks that we had to move to Echo Centre to accommodate the crowd. We’ll be cruising up the Danube and Rhine rivers for fourteen days in late September of 2013. From what we saw in the slide show, it will be absolutely fantastic. All flights, meals, wine and walking tours are included in one reasonable price. If you would like all the details call Cathy at Twin Travel and she will fill you in.
